The Big Vasily

Last night's Russian Rhapsody concert at Music Hall was not well attended. The solo pianist, Jon Kimura Parker was undaunted by the lack of audience and gave a great performance, even coming back for an encore, addressing the audience from the stage as if it were an intimate setting.

The afterparty at Lavomatic was fun. The food was fantastic, of course and it was a perfectly crisp fall night. We occupied the upper floor and patio and projected The Big Lebowski on the wall of the condos next door.

Congratulations to Enjoy the Arts for another unique 20/20 event!

Commando Midpoint

Sep
25

I don't know who I am going to see at Midpoint this year. I had planned to spend a few weekends reviewing all of the bands, listening to all of their MySpace pages, but alas no, I didn't get that done.

Instead I am going to Commando Midpoint and just jump in and see what happens. I will hit the pre-show tonight at Fountain Square to see Seabird tonight at 6PM, with my CityBeat program in hand and will pick out tonight’s shows.

Every year I tell myself to only see out of town bands. Why? Well, simple, I won't get to see them again, and I can see the bands I know or that are local when ever they play.

This year I don't feel any big buzz on the out of town bands, other than the headliners which I don't think I am going to see. I may pick out a few local favorites of mine (like say Pearlene - Eat Sugar - Wussy - Jake Speed and the Freddies) and see them and see who else is at those venues.

If not that, I'll just ride the Scion Streetcars around all night and holler at the ladies.

Sunday Night - Lite Brite

Jul
30

John Waters "hate[s] to be the one to tell you" any number of things: that there is a website dedicated to "blossoms", that he was convicted of obscenity every time charged, that he's looking for a pre-teen contortionist to include in his road show, etc.

Mr. Waters' Q&A session at the end invited questions like: If you were at a nudist camp and could only take one accessory, what would it be? (Boxer shorts)

I was dreading standing around in the smoky hall so waited until 9:30 before heading in. Fortunately, his show started right on time. Much of his hour+ stand-up material was included in recent interviews but it was well worth the price of admission for the parts that weren't. Unfortunately, the Southgate House ballroom wasn't full.

Florencia en el Amazonas

Cincinnati Opera's first mainstage production in Spanish was last week at Music Hall. Saturday night's show was not sold out but had strong attendance.

The set was on the minimalist side and didn't change much throughout. The music and voices were lovely and it's always impressive to see the coordination of so many elements in a single show: singers, dancers, chorus, orchestra, set production, costumes, lighting, surcaps, pre-show entertainment outside, etc.

The opera is starting their shows at 7:30 instead of 8. Which means dinner after is a better option than dinner before. It's too far to walk to Shanghai in opera shoes but the short drive is worth it for some late night pad thai.

It's not to early to get your tickets

Jul

I've never been to Lite Brite but if it's good enough for John Waters, it's good enough for me.

I bought my ticket online yesterday. It's $25 for his show on Sunday but just $5 more for the 3-day pass. (7/25-27)

It takes something special

Mar
30
to get me out of my normal Saturday routine. This Saturday's tribute to Patricia Corbett qualified. Several of the many organizations that Mrs. Corbett loved, came together for this free concert. Music Hall's orchestra and first balcony were almost full. It was lovely. Mrs. Corbett's grandson spoke and challenged everyone in the audience to continue supporting the arts via event attendance.

Nixon in Cincinnati

Jul
16

I'm always impressed by the power required for opera singers to project their voices out over the orchestra without microphones and music hall is always a great experience. Saturday's audience for Nixon in China was a nice mix of the usual opera crowd and some < 40's.

Slice of life is an interesting style for an opera. Most operas involve big dramatic events, murder, kidnapping, weddings, etc. This one kind of moved along and then was over. My favorite part was the pig song in the second act.
