Fringe Review: Empire of Feathers

Hope in the face of never ending war, bigotry, and ignorance is the quill that stuck with me after "Empire of Feathers" from Giant Bird. Experimental theatre gives each audience member the chance to take away something unique. I took away many wonderful things: fun musical whimsy, quaintly charming props robbed from a child's play room, and great physical humor.

Day 1 Continued: Empire of Feathers

It's difficult to "review"Empire of Feathers, in that it's exactly what you go to Fringe to see: aggressively experiemental work that pushes the boundaries of theatre and of conventional thinking.

Although it starts out with the actors talking to the audience, once the action starts, the play has a relatively linear narrative. Of course, advancing that narrative involves projecting images on the ceiling and behind the audience, the use of old toys and found objects, and some pretty catchy songs, and other performance tricks.

Don't Sit in the Front Row if You Haven't Done the Reading

Last night the trek through 31 shows started with A Perfectly Wonderful Evening.

They started the evening with massive sound problems. Reminder: if you are looking for perfect production values from a play, Fringe is probably not the best place to search.

Fringe Review: A Perfectly Wonderful Evening

Why would T. S. Eliot and Groucho Marx meet for dinner? That is Harold Bloom's profound question. The why is left to the audience. The why it would be odd comes from Bloom's contention that T. S. Eliot was an anti-Semite, something there is debate on in the real world, but for this production, look past that.

Picking Fringe With a Blindfold

Before the festival starts it is very difficult to know what are going to be the stand out shows. You can base it on buzz, on prior success, on reputation, or you could just be a fool and trust me. In case you're a fool, here are my Pre-Fringe must see shows (in no order):

1. April Fools
2. 7 (x1) Samurai
3. The 4 Food Groups
4. Guns and Chickens
5. Body Language II: PHYS. ED.
6. Brother Bailey's Pageant of Moral Superiority and Creation Science Jamboree

Why I'm Seeing 31 Shows in 11 Days

As a new blogger on The Conveyor, I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Shawn. I'm seeing the entire 2009 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

I suppose that the logical question would be: why would you make a plan for yourself to see--and blog--31 shows in 11 days? Are you sane?

oh it's on!

so here I stand at 950pm in the Underground at the beginning of the Fringe Kick Off Party and I find myself hoping already that Les brought at LEAST a case of those hangover patches he was sporting last year!!!!!

woooohoooo! It's Fringe!!!!!!!!!!!

This is What a Full Fringe Looks Like

I have my tickets. I have my camera. I have a pen. I have a fresh new reporter's notebook. I have my press pass. My laundry will last until the weekend. I have 11 days of shows ahead of me. I will not be getting much sleep. If you see me at the Bar Series and I look a little out of it, then walk me to the door, turn me North on Jackson St. Tell me to to take a left turn, then a right turn, and up the stairs.

It is Fringe Time. This is Cincinnati. I am really doing this. It is happening now.

Word of the day

Who knows where words come from? Here's one that's been getting a lot of usage around Fringe HQ lately.

BORNTRAGER
born-TRAY-ger
(verb, -ed, -ing)
from the Latin "duggles borntraegorus"

def:To call the box office and trick Alex into thinking you're a 90-year-old woman with a very long list of highly involved questions about Fringe; to possess a phone voice that is very believably that of a 90-year-old woman; to be a righteous production manager that everybody loves to have around.

Origin:

Segway Window Cleaning

Fringe staff have been introduced to the wonder that is Segways.

I'm not sure Eric will walk ever again. We have all been loving the humongous grin that has been plastered to his face the past week. I think the grin is only going to get bigger.

Today while we were cleaning up around these parts, Eric took to cleaning on a segway! Check out his mad skills.

Segways are really fun. If you'd like to try one visit http://segwayofohio.com/

Fringe changes lives!

Hey everybody. Sadie here, serving as Artist Liaison for this year's Fringe. This is my first year on festival staff, but lemme tell ya, The Cincinnati Fringe Festival literally changed the course of my life.

I Love Volunteers!

Over 100 people fulfill the 200+ volunteer needs for The 2009 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

We are currently at 80% capacity, which rocks!
Thanks to everyone that has signed up. We still have more slots to fill.

The Fringe Festival runs on volunteers from it’s humble beginnings six years ago to today.
It’s the lifeblood of the next wild ‘n’ crazy twelve days. It would not be possible to do a festival this size without the generous time, energy and passion of our volunteer core.

preparations

We are but a mere three (say it with a rolling 'r') days away from the Official CityBeat Fringe Festival Kick-Off Party...and thereby the start of the 2009 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Oh yeah.

Venues are being loaded in as I type - most are already done. Rock on, Doug.

Volunteer slots are filling up fast...but there is still time to help. Thank you, Brain, Bridget, Matt (your software is...well, cool) and Jay!

Passes and tickets are selling. You know. You've already talked to Alex.

Fringe Action News Tipline!

One addition to the 6th Annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival are nightly newscasts from your lovely Channel Fringe anchors, Megan Venzin and Sadie Bowman. Though Megan and Sadie will be Segwaying through the streets in pursuit of news, we need your help to get the hottest stories. We can't be everywhere at once, and Segways only get to 12.5 mph, so please send ANY interesting/funny/ridonkulous happenings to actionnewstipline@knowtheatre.com for a chance to see this content included in our nightly newscasts!
